Just heard ZANU-PF has won the first seat in the recount.
LloydAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6900460698887397063.post-37715626516671823982008-04-22T22:36:00.000+01:002008-04-22T22:36:00.000+01:00Gershom, It is now time for genuinely democratic l...Gershom,

It is now time for genuinely democratic loving SADC countries joined the countries that have imposed sanctions on Mugabe and his cronies so that even the little maize that is coming from countries such as Zambia stop crossing the Zambezi.

First of all, it is illegal for countries to put sanctions on any other country. Only the United Nations can do that.

Secondly, the fact is that there are no sanctions that specifically target "Robert Mugabe and his cronies". We are talking about sanctions against hundreds of individuals, who together make up the Zimbabwean government and beyond.

Thirdly, the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001 is not against any individual or group of individuals, but specifically against the government of Zimbabwe in it's entirity. It has banned the government of Zimbabwe from borrowing, getting credit or have debt cancelled (like Zambia), by at least 9 international financial institutions, the IMF and beyond that, any country that does business with them.

The thing that tells you that the MDC and their cronies are not straight shooters and have ulterior motives, is that they LIE about whether there are sanctions against Zimbabwe.

Lastly, why is Zimbabwe in the good books with the World Bank and the IMF? Because they 'welcome foreign investment' of the kind that treats workers like slaves.

Why are the ministers in charge not doing their jobs (I think they aren't doing their jobs and it is up to them) and put these employers on trial, let alone revoke their licenses?

Becaus Gershom, it is all part of the same picture. Mugabe said 'no' to the IMF, which is when all his troubles started, just like they started for KK in 1991, or Edith Nawakwi and Frederick Chiluba in 1999. All of a sudden, he had to be made an example of.

Neocolonialism is real, it is not just a term, and it entails some tremendously powerful forces, and hundreds of billions of dollars in trade, as well as the power to keep Africa on it's knees and prevent it from being a competitor with Europe or the USA.

The IMF and World Bank have never developed a single country, and you should really start to consider why not? Where ever they go, their neoliberal world view wrecks economies, destroys economic independence and benefits western corporations. Maybe they are not simply incompetent?

And when it comes to applying the same principles to their own economy, they run a mile from it. Bear Stearns? It's 'too big to fail', so it is supported by western taxpayers money. If that was ZNCB, the demand would have been 'let it fail' and 'let market forces sort it all out'.

Privatisation? Who in Africa has the money to buy up parastatals? No one, so they are bought up by Australians, Canadians, Indians, etc. Coincidence - I don't think so.

Why do you think they preach free trade, but there are still massive agricultural subsidies in France, the UK, Germany, Italy, the USA... Coincidence - of course not. They will not apply neoliberal principles to their own economies.

And the neoliberal policies they apply in the third world all benefit their own economies. Another coincidence? I don't think so.

The USA, the UK are still fearing economic competition with China, India, and of course when they develop, the entire South.MrKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12801241362245253006noreply@blogger.com
